How to tell if artwork is AI-generated
Brush and stroke consistency. Look at how strokes begin, turn and end, and whether hatching follows objects. Inconsistent details may deserve closer inspection, but technique, brushes and intentional experimentation can also explain them.
Style mixing. Compare the treatment of faces, hands, backgrounds and objects. Mixed styles are a prompt to ask about the process, not proof of AI use: artists deliberately combine media and influences.
Text, signage and logos. Inspect lettering, jewellery, straps and other small details. Look for internal contradictions while allowing for stylization, low resolution and unfinished work.
Physical objects and lighting. Compare reflections and shadows with the imagined scene. Artwork need not obey photographic physics, so ask whether an inconsistency is intentional before treating it as a clue.
Zoom in, then ask for process evidence. Inspect details at the original resolution. Smearing can come from generation, upscaling, compression or an artist’s choices. Layered files, sketches and dated progress exports are more useful than a visual hunch.
What does not establish AI use. Clean linework, flat colour, gradients, airbrush, texture brushes and anime style are artistic conventions. Machine-smooth illustration can be handmade, and generated work can look handmade.
What the report actually shows
The classification. AI-generated or human-made, with model confidence. The same classification service powers the homepage checker; this page does not use an independently tuned art model.
A dated record. The private report includes the submitted image and available model output, with JSON export and printing. It does not explain which regions caused the prediction.
A note on digital workflow. Keep your layered source files, work-in-progress exports or timelapse separately. The production service accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF images, not layered project files or video evidence attachments.
Built for artists, illustrators and the people who buy from them
Artists reviewing a portfolio, buyers checking a commission, galleries doing an initial screen and creators responding to an incorrect flag can all use the result as a starting point. None should use it alone to decide ownership, payment or an accusation.
The artwork guidance focuses on style, process and source evidence. For a suspicious photograph or a possible edit, read the fake image detector guide. Both pages use the same underlying classification and share the free allowance.
If your own artwork was flagged
1. Read the limitations. A model can misclassify handmade work. Its confidence does not establish authorship, and this report does not identify which brush strokes or regions caused a flag.
2. Preserve the source files. Keep layers, dated sketches, progress photos and timelapse exports. Share them directly with the client or platform handling your case using an appropriate private channel.
3. Ask for a contextual review. Contact the person or platform that flagged the work and explain your process. Imagefake does not provide an in-report appeal or guaranteed human review service. Product and billing support remain available through Contact.
Frequently asked questions
Can this tell me if a painting or digital illustration is AI-generated?
It provides an AI / human prediction, not a determination of authorship. We have not independently benchmarked it across art styles or generators. Use process evidence alongside the result.
Does it work on a photo of a physical painting?
It accepts a supported photo file, but the camera, lighting and compression may affect the classification. Photograph the whole work straight on in even light and keep the original file.
My own artwork was flagged as AI. What do I do?
Preserve your layers, dated sketches and progress recordings, and ask the party making the claim to review that evidence. A detector result alone does not settle authorship. There is no in-report human appeal service.
Can a gallery or client use this before paying for a commission?
Use it as an initial signal only. Ask for source files and an explanation of the process before making a consequential decision. A score is not a basis on its own to withhold payment or accuse an artist.
Does it detect AI-assisted work such as generative fill or upscaling?
It does not reliably separate every assisted workflow from full generation or handmade work. A human-made prediction does not mean every part was drawn by hand.
Is my artwork used for training?
Imagefake keeps its image copy and report for up to 24 hours, and you can delete a completed report sooner. Our detection provider may retain anonymized images to improve its models; its retention is separate. Do not upload sensitive or confidential images. Read privacy before uploading.
How many artwork checks do I get?
1 free check. No account needed. Then $2.99 per calendar month for 20 checks. Active subscribers can buy 10 permanent credits for $1.49; those credits remain usable after the subscription ends. Checks are subject to available capacity.
Can I put an artwork report in a dispute?
It is a dated record of a model prediction, not evidence that establishes authorship. Acceptance depends on the receiving party; Imagefake makes no guarantee. Read terms for the service limits.
